Telematic units or connectivity boxes serve as the foundation for the connected vehicle. These devices can enable and manage different types of protocols such as WiFi, Bluetooth, and NFC (all wireless); Ethernet, OBD, CAN (all wired); and GPS, GLONASS, Galileo (all navigation). Additionally, they also come with vehicle parameter measuring sensors such as accelerometers.
All these connectivity technologies enable the collection and transfer of data, to the cloud; wherein, analytics can be run to uncover insights which can be very useful for the whole automotive value chain from supplier to the customer.
With regards to the choice of a telematic unit, the type of connectivity technologies covered by the device directly depends on the use case which the device will serve.
Hence, a company looking to implement telematics in vehicles need to first perform an internal audit regarding use cases in focus.
